Trojans Win On Both Coasts
Nov. 4, 2011
After first-round losses to high seeds out at the ITA National Indoor Championships, USC's Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento rebounded with consolation singles wins today in New York. Nguyen took down Boise State's Damian Hume with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, and Ray Sarmiento also offered up a straight-set win with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Rollins' Javita Lucas.
Those wins put the two Trojans in consolation quarterfinal matches tomorrow out at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Back home in California at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships in Westwood, freshman Yannick Hanfmann's quarterfinal clash with No. 5 seed Georgy Batrakov was stalled out by rain with Hanfmann leading 3-2. When action resumed later in the afternoon, Hanfmann pushed out for a 6-4, 6-4 win that sends him to tomorrow's semifinals. He'll face either UCLA's Clay Thompson or BYU's Keaton Cullimore, once that pair finishes up their rain-suspended quarterfinal match tomorrow morning.
Doubles play was cancelled due to rain and is set to start up tomorrow with two Trojan teams scheduled for Round of 16 action.
