Torres, Hoskins Advance To Championship Quarterfinals|

CARSON, Calif. - USC men's tennis advanced two players in singles competition with upset victories on Friday, Oct. 24, at the 2003 ITA Men's Tennis West Regional Championship being played at the Home Depot Center in Carson. The Trojans' Ruben Torres and Drew Hoskins will compete in the main draw quarterfinals on Saturday.
A 9-16 seed, Torres advanced with an upset victory over Pepperdine's 24th-ranked and second-seeded Calle Hansen, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. The USC senior will now face UCLA freshman Kris Kwinta, also a 9-16 seed, on Saturday.
The Trojans' unseeded Hoskins continued his outstanding play by defeating fifth-seeded and 59th-ranked Pierrick Ysern of San Diego, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Hoskins will face Pepperdine's fourth-seeded Pedro Rico in tomorrows quarterfinal.
Hoskins and Johan Berg, USC's only remaining doubles team, was eliminated Friday afternoon in the Round of 16 with an 8-3 loss to Daniel Andrus and Paul Warkentin of Arizona. Berg was also eliminated from singles play with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Felix Hardt of San Diego State.
The ITA West Regional Championship will conclude with the singles, doubles and consolation championship matches on Sunday, Oct. 26. The championship matches will begin at 11 a.m. (originally they were scheduled to begin at noon) at the Home Depot Center.
