MALIBU, CALIF. -- After an outstanding run through the ITA West Regional singles action, USC junior Jamil Al-Agba was knocked out in the singles semifinals by UCLA's Chris Surapol on Sunday in Malibu, Calif.

Third-seeded Al-Agba had roared through four matches, including a three-set victory over UCLA's No. 5 seed Mathieu Dehaine in yesterday's quarterfinals, to earn his shot against No. 2 seed Surapol in the semis. There, Surapol held strong against Al-Agba to post a 6-4, 6-4 victory that moves Surapol into the championship against Pepperdine's Andre Begemann.

In consolation singles action, it was an all-USC final between freshman Gary Sacks and junior Jarryd Cooper. Both Trojans pulled out three-set wins in the semifinals to reach the consolation championship match. Sacks beat San Diego's Sekiguchi 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in his semifinal, and Cooper edged LMU's Phillips 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 in his semifinal match. Cooper ended up taking control in the consolation championship match against his Trojan teammate, tacking up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sacks to claim the consolation crown and put the finishing touches on a solid run through the ITA action for Cooper. Cooper had begun the competition in the qualifying rounds, earning his place in the main draw with three qualifying wins. He lost in the Round of 64 in the main draw to move into the consolation round, where he whipped up five wins to claim the title.

The ITA West Regional competition puts a close to the USC men's fall season. They will resume action in January 2007.
