Trojans Wrap Up Play At Battle In The Bay|
Oct. 14, 2013
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. -- Three members of the USC men's tennis team engaged in some Bay Area action this past weekend with a visit to the Battle in the Bay. In his first official singles action as a Trojan, freshman Nick Crystal forced his way through to the quarterfinals of the main draw, while junior Eric Johnson cut his way to the consolation semifinals.
Nick Crystal had a successful doubles campaign with fellow freshman Robbie Bellamy last weekend at the Aztec Invitational. This weekend, Crystal went solo and enjoyed some strong successes in the singles bracket of the Battle in the Bay. Crystal posted straight-set wins in the Round of 32 and Round of 16, including a victory over San Francisco's #109 Bernardo Saraiva in the latter match. Crystal would fall in the quarterfinals to Cal's Andre Goransson.
Crystal had two other Trojan teammates looped into the singles action as well. Sophomore Max de Vroome and junior Eric Johnson both took losses in the Round of 32, however, putting the pair into consolation competition. There, de Vroome stumbled to UCLA's #104 Karue Sell while #58 Eric Johnson notched a win in the consolation Round of 16 and then another in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis. He'd come up against Sell in that one, taking a 6-4, 6-3 loss there to wrap the junior's run at the Battle in the Bay.
