Drew Hoskins Wins Two At ITA Qualifier|
Oct. 7, 2004
LOS ANGELES -- USC men's tennis senior Drew Hoskins won two matches in the qualifying round of 2004 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships, but was unable to advance into the tournament's main draw despite a three-set effort in the final. The tournament, which is being held at the Champions Club in Chatanooga, Tenn., is a two-week event that culminates with the championship rounds this Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 7-10.
Hoskins, who entered the qualifier as the 17th overall seed, defeated Robbert Lathouwers of Auburn 6-1, 6-3 in the opener, then beat conference opponent Patrick Briaud of Cal 6-4, 7-5 in the second round. In the final round, Hoskins forced ninth-seeded Rylan Rizza to three sets after winning the first 6-4. But in the end, Rizza came away with the final decision, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Senior Johan Berg and sophomore Jamil Al-Agba will represent the Trojans in this weekend's main draw event. Berg is the only returning player to the tournament for USC. In 2003 he received a "lucky loser" spot in the main draw of the championship and advanced to the Round of 16 before falling to eventual finalist Benedickt Dorsch of Baylor.
With over 350 competitors, it is the largest single tournament in collegiate tennis and features the nation's top collegiate players. This the first of three national championship events during the 2004-05 season at the NCAA Division I level. The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and is followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
