Trojans' ITA All-American Runs End In Quarterfinals
Oct. 6, 2012
TULSA, OKLA. - USC junior Emilio Gomez came up one upset short of a semifinal spot in the ITA Men's All-American Championship singles draw, falling in the quarterfinals to the No. 6 seed in Tulsa, Okla. Fellow Trojan junior Ray Sarmiento also saw his All-American run come to a close in the quarterfinals, although both Trojans have earned their right to play in the ITA National Indoor Championships later in the season with their solid singles efforts. #23 Emilio Gomez had upended the tournament's No. 11 seed and top seed in back-to-back wins to take his place in the quarterfinals. Today, Gomez took on Virginia's No. 6 seeded Alex Domijan, who was able to snap Gomez' upset streak with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the Trojan to steal a semifinal spot. USC's No. 7 seeded Ray Sarmiento, meanwhile, came up against an upset-minded Matija Pecotic of Princeton. The Tiger had been making strong moves through the singles draw, most recently managing an amazing marathon win over USC sophomore Roberto Quiroz in the Round of 16. Matija was solid again against Sarmiento in the quarterfinals, and Sarmiento would retire from the match with Matija leading 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1.
