Sarmiento Sweeps At Battle In The Bay
Oct. 3, 2010
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - The USC men's tennis team got in some extra fall work this weekend in a tournament hosted by the University of San Francisco, and it was an especially successful start to the year for freshman Ray Sarmiento. The Trojan newcomer won four singles matches to claim the title at the Battle in the Bay, and combined forces with sophomore JT Sundling to win out in doubles action.
Sarmiento picked up the No. 2 seed in the singles bracket for the weekend, and rolled through a string of straight-set wins to get into the title match against top-seeded Thai Tu from host USF. Sarmiento rallied back from a first-set loss and rolled out a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 comeback to claim the singles crown.
On the doubles side, Sarmiento and Sundling had their toughest battle in the quarterfinal round, with the Trojan pair upending a duo from Pepperdine 9-7 to get to the semis. There, Sarmiento/Sundling topped a team from Pacific 8-6, and went on cruise control in the title match to take an 8-2 win over Cal's McLachlan/McLachlan pair and wrap up a successful trip to San Francisco for the Trojans.
