TULSA, OKLA. -- The USC men's tennis team had a big first day of main draw action at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., as three Trojans served up takedowns of seeded opponents in the first round and No. 7 seeded Trojan Ray Sarmiento pulled out two wins to advance to tomorrow's Round of 16.

Sarmiento stands out as USC's only seeded player in the draw, and he held his ground solidly in opening up with a three-set win over Texas A&M's #56 Shane Vinsant and following that with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Oklahoma's #85 Axel Alvarez. Those wins puts the #8 senior in tomorrow's Round of 16 against Illinois' #17 Jared Hiltzik.

The Trojans definitely shook things up early in the day when qualifiers Michael Grant and Jonny Wang kicked things off by stunning the draw with upsets wins over high seeds. #80 senior Grant registered a win over No. 3 seeded Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt with a 7-5 win in the first set before Lipman retired due to injury in the second with Grant up 4-3 in that one. #63 junior Wang, meanwhile, rebounded from a first-set loss to No. 2 seed Peter Kobelt of Ohio State and beat the Buckeye with a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 comeback victory for a landmark win. Joining the upset club for USC was #25 junior Roberto Quiroz, who was up against No. 10 seed Japie DeKlerk of host Tulsa and shows no signs of stress with his solid 6-3, 6-1 win.

The whole USC contingent would move into the afternoon's Round of 32, but only Sarmiento would emerge victorious. Valiant efforts came from all Trojans in the afternoon, with Grant just missing another upset win in falling 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 to Columbia's #54 Winston Lin. Quiroz would take a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Oklahoma's #36 Guillermo Alcorta, and Wang was tripped up by San Diego's #42 Clarke Spinosa in a 7-6, 6-4 decision.
