The top-ranked USC men's tennis team began its quest for a fourth consecutive NCAA title by posting a quick 4-0 win over Fairfield in the first round of the 2012 Men's Tennis Championship on Saturday (May 12) at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium.

The Trojans (28-1), the NCAA tourney's top seed, now face Texas A&M on Sunday (May 13) at noon in an NCAA second round match at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium. The Aggies defeated South Carolina, 4-0, in a first round match earlier on Saturday at USC.

Fairfield, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion that was making its first-ever NCAA appearance, ended its season with a 16-5 record.

USC took just 35 minutes to win the doubles point, as Troy's No. 2-ranked team of Steve Johnson and Roberto Quiroz beat Fairfield's No. 1 duo of Dan Sauter and Dennis Zlobinsky, 8-2, and then Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento (ranked 35th nationally) defeated Joe Michalisin and Erik Kremheller, 8-1, on the No. 2 court.

The Trojans breezed through singles in 50 minutes in similar fashion. No. 1-ranked Steve Johnson, the defending NCAA singles champion, won his unprecedented 61st consecutive singles match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Dan Sauter on the No. 1 court. USC's Ray Sarmiento, ranked 25th in the nation, followed soon after with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ian Tesmond at No. 2 singles. There was a race for the Trojans' clinching third singles victory between No. 51-ranked Yannick Hanfmann on the No. 4 court and Eric Johnson on the adjacent No. 6 court, with Hanfmann finishing a few seconds ahead by posting a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dennis Zlobinsky.

Daniel Nguyen, who plays No. 3 singles for the Trojans and is ranked 21st nationally, sat out singles play against Fairfield.

USC, which won the inaugural 2012 Pac-12 Team Championship after having its 45-match winning streak halted by UCLA at the end of the regular season, is looking to be just the second team to win 4 consecutive national championships under the current NCAA team tournament format, following Stanford's run from 1995-98. The Trojans lead the nation with 19 national team titles.
