    LOS ANGELES -

The No. 7 seeded Trojans advance to the Round of 16 by sweeping No. 40 San Diego State 4-0 in the second round on Saturday (May 9) in Marks Stadium. USC improves to a 24-4 overall record.

The Trojans collected the first win of the afternoon as USC's Crystal/Forget defeated San Diego State's Cevellos/Goles-Babic 8-3 on court three in doubles. On court two, the Trojan duo of #74 de Vroome/Johnson was locked in an exciting battle of impressive volleys and smart shots with Aztecs Bertsch/Meinzer. USC powered through and finished the match 8-5 to collect the doubles point for Troy.

The Trojans entered the singles portion of the match with a 1-0 lead over the Aztecs. On court three, San Diego State's Marko Goles-Babic retired in the first set due to injury with #85 Eric Johnson leading 3-0 to give Johnson the win and the second point for Troy.

USC's #61 Nick Crystal found his momentum on court six as he triumphed over San Diego State's Santiago Cevallos. He powered through the first set with a strong 6-0 score. In the second set, Crystal took a 5-1 lead, but Cevallos fought back to close the gap at 5-3. In the next game, Crystal battled his way out of a deuce to win the advantage, and ultimately the set and the match with a final score of 6-3.

The Trojans continued to grind, but the day would be closed out by USC's #45 Jonny Wang. On court four, Wang competed with San Diego State's Thorsten Bertsch. After winning the first set 6-3, Wang finished his match with a powerful overhead swing to win 6-2 and clinch the match for the Trojans. This was Wang's fourth clincher of the season.

Coach Peter Smith was pleased with his team's play throughout the weekend.

"I'm really happy with our energy," Smith said. "We played on edge all day today. Every point had meaning, and we can really tell that we are comfortable in this position. We have a really great NCAA mindset, and I'm really happy with the team today."

The Trojans will face No. 10 Duke (24-6) in the Round of 16 in Waco, Texas at Baylor University's Hurd Tennis Center on May 14. This weekend in Durham, N.C., Duke defeated South Carolina (5-0) and Stanford (4-1) in the first and second rounds, respectively. This is the fifth time in the last six years that the Blue Devils have successfully navigated their way to the Round of 16. The Trojans are 6-4 in their series record with the Blue Devils.
