USC Completes First Day Of Pac-10 Singles Action
April 26, 2007
OJAI, CALIF. - The top-10 USC men's and women's tennis teams put forth a strong singles performance in the first round of the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai. Calif. By day's end, five Trojans had punched their tickets into the quarterfinals of the men's and women's main draw. On the women's side, Anca Anastasiu, Sarah Fansler and Lindsey Nelson move into quarterfinal action at 11:30 a.m. on Friday with a pair of wins apiece on the first day of play. For the men, Dejan Cvetkovic and Kaes Van't Hof also tacked up a winning day to step into quarterfinal play on Friday.
On the men's side, the No. 10 Trojans saw #51 Dejan Cvetkovic open the Round of 32 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Geoff Embry. He went on to top Cal's Tyler Browne 6-4, 7-6 (4) in order to earn a matchup against #91 Juan Carlos Rebaza of ASU in the quarterfinals. Also with two wins on Thursday was #67 Kaes Van't Hof, who first downed Cal's Ken Nakahara 6-4, 6-3. He went on to stage a comeback win over UCLA's Philipp Gruendler in the Round of 16 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision that vaults him into Friday's quarterfinal contest against Stanford's Matt Bruch.
Meanwhile, #10 Sarah Fansler got the No. 9 Women of Troy off to a good start with the freshman's 7-5, 6-3 win over Washington State's Ekaterina Burduli in the women's tournament draw. She followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win over #67 Sabrina Capannolo of ASU for her ticket to the quarterfinals against Stanford's #14 Celia Durkin. Joining Fansler in quarterfinal play are Anca Anastasiu and Lindsey Nelson. Anastasiu's trip through the first two rounds was slightly unique, as she moved out of the invitational draw when another player withdrew earlier in the day. Anastasiu proved her worth with a comeback victory over UCLA's Tracy Lin, pulling out a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win. In the Round of 16, Anastasiu got the win after Stanford's #20 Jessica Nguyen had to withdraw from the match. That lifts Anastasiu into the quarterfinals against #4 Susie Babos of Cal, who edged out USC sophomore Amanda Fink in the Round of 16 with her 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback against the Trojan. Although Fink missed a trip to the quarters with that tough loss, USC sent a third player into Friday's competition when #9 Lindsey Nelson pounded out two decisive wins. She first beat Oregon's Carmen Seremeta 6-2, 6-2, and then topped Arizona's Juliette Mavroleon 6-4, 6-2. Wins by Anastasiu and Fansler would pit the two Women of Troy against one another in Saturday's semifinals at 11 a.m.
In the invitational side of the Pac-10 competition, senior Women of Troy Julie Smekodub and Judy DeVera also tacked up two straight-set wins apiece to move into the invitational quarters. Smekodub will face UCLA's Alex McGoodwin, and DeVera is up against Stanford's Lejla Hodzic on Friday. On the men's side, three Trojans also drilled their ways into the quarters. Jason McNaughton will square off against Stanford's David Ryan; Garrett Snyder faces Washington's Michael Ricks; and Adam Loucks goes up against Cal's Daniel Sebescan. If McNaughton and Snyder both win, it would be an all-Trojan semifinal in the invitational draw on Saturday.
Tomorrow, doubles play will get underway with Round of 16 matches. The USC men and women each have a pair of teams entered in the man tournament draw. For the men the Trojans have Robert Farah / Kaes Van't Hof and Dejan Cvetkovic / Gary Sacks entered. And on the women's side, Judy DeVera / Amanda Fink and Dianne Matias / Lindsey Nelson will be competing for a run at the Pac-10 doubles crown. Matchups and times for all doubles play are below.
