Farah Streaks Into Singles Final And Doubles Title Match
April 24, 2010
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - USC senior Robert Farah welcomes another busy day in Ojai, as the Trojan is all set to go for a sweep at the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Championships tomorrow. Farah got a strong semifinal singles win today to jump into tomorrow's title match, then teamed back up with Steve Johnson in doubles. Farah/Johnson won their 11th straight match together today, setting up the duo for a shot at the doubles crown tomorrow afternoon in Ojai, Calif.
Farah snagged his 10th straight singles win with his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Stanford's Ryan Thacher in today's semifinal. Farah has pinned up straight-set wins throughout this year's Pac-10 Tournament run, and he now takes aim at claiming his first career Pac-10 Singles Championship. A three-time semifinalist now, Farah also reached the title match in 2008. That year, Farah's Trojan teammate Kaes Van't Hof won the singles crown, and then he and Farah combined forces in doubles play to win the 2008 Pac-10 doubles championship. Now a senior, top-seeded Farah is in hot pursuit of the same prize as he sets up to face defending champ Bradley Klahn of Stanford in the Pac-10 Singles final before joining forces with his sophomore teammate Steve Johnson in the afternoon's Pac-10 Doubles title match.
Farah/Johnson proved their well-deserved top seed with another solid win in today's doubles semifinals. The Trojans went up against Washington's McMorrow/Nedunchezhiyan for their shot at the title match, and the USC pair dispatched the third-seeded Huskies 8-4. That puts Farah/Johnson in a 2 p.m. championship bout against UCLA's fourth-seeded Inbar/Meister tomorrow.
Carrying a 15-match singles winning streak into today's competition, sophomore Daniel Nguyen took on the Pac-10 defending singles champ in the other semifinal match, and put up an all-out battle against Stanford's No. 2 seed Bradley Klahn. The No. 8-seeded Nguyen fought to force a third set, but Klahn got the win and a trip to the final against Farah with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over Nguyen.
In Invitational action, USC freshman JT Sundling has earned himself a trip to tomorrow's singles title match. Sundling beat Washington's Alex Rosinski 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 today in the invitational semifinals. That puts the Trojan up against UCLA's Alex Brigham tomorrow in the final.
