April 7, 2012
TUCSON, ARIZ. -- The No. 1 USC men's tennis team keeps its clean slate shining with today's 6-1 win in Pac-12 play at Arizona, bringing the Trojans back to Los Angeles with a slick 23-0 record on the year to go with a 43-match win streak overall. Today's clincher was freshman Jordi Vives, who controlled his No. 6 singles match for a 6-1, 7-5 win that put USC's fourth Pac-12 win of the year in the books.
USC's doubles clinic began on court two, where #18 Daniel Nguyen / Ray Sarmiento shoved their way to an 8-2 win. Court three's Emilio Gomez / Yannick Hanfmann did the rest with an 8-3 win that locked in a 1-0 lead for the Trojans before #15 Steve Johnson / Roberto Quiroz wrapped doubles action with a 7-6 (2) win at the top spot. Nguyen and Hanfmann would step aside for singles play to make room for Trojan freshmen Eric Johnson and Jordi Vives in the lineup. Now at the No. 3 spot, USC's #53 sophomore Emilio Gomez made himself at home with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mario Urquidi to get USC ahead 2-0. Streaking #2 senior Steve Johnson blazed a trail to his 55th consecutive singles win with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot over Giacomo Miccini, and the Trojans were promptly up 3-0.
That put the clincher up for grabs, and Jordi Vives honed right in on the win by holding strong in his second set to claim his 6-1, 7-5 decision over Sepastian Ionescu for the 4-0 USC advantage. #23 sophomore Ray Sarmiento sealed his sixth win in a row on a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over Andre Vidaller on court two, and then Roberto Quiroz tacked up a 6-3, 7-5 win over Sumeet Shinde at No. 4 to carry the Trojans ahead 6-0. The battle of the day wound up on court five, where USC freshman Eric Johnson saw the scales tip in favor of Arizona's Carlos Bermudez in a 7-5, 7-5 loss that topped off the match as a 6-1 USC win.
The Trojans now return to Los Angeles to close down the regular season from their home courts at Marks Stadium. Next week, USC will host California in a 1:30 p.m. Pac-12 clash on Friday (April 13) before taking on Stanford at 1 p.m. on Saturday (April 14).
