No. 1 USC Men Roll Up Two More|
Feb. 24, 2012
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The top-ranked USC men's tennis team kept its championship train charging down the tracks with two shutout wins at home in a doubleheader that followed up the Trojans' win at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships earlier in the week. Today, the Trojans overmatched No. 60 San Diego State and No. 24 San Diego with two perfect 7-0 sweeps down the line, bulking up USC's 2012 tally to a 13-0 overall record to make it a solid 33-match win streak dating back to 2011.
USC got a good load of freshmen in on the winning action to start the day, as newcomers Yannick Hanfmann, Roberto Quiroz, Eric Johnson, Jordi Vives and Jonny Wang all rang up victories in the first match. Johnson and Vives combined forces in doubles to pull out a tight tiebreaker on court three and bring up singles play with a 1-0 USC lead. Quiroz, Johnson and Wang rounded out the 4, 5 and 6 slots with straight-set domination, with Quiroz securing the win for the Trojans on a 6-1, 6-3 clincher on court four over SDSU's Rickey Baylon. Sophomore Ray Sarmiento was on court one today for a smooth win at the top spot to kick off the day for USC.
In round two under the lights, USC squared off with San Diego, helmed by former USC assistant coach Brett Masi. The Trojans did not back down in this one either, cruising to another shutout with a smooth stretch of straight-set wins. Emilio Gomez had the clincher in the nightcap with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Clarke Spinosa on court three. Hanfmann, Sarmiento and Gomez all rounded out the day's efforts with two wins to their names with singles sweeps across the two matches. Senior Steve Johnson, meanwhile, stretched his personal singles win streak to 47 in a row when he stepped up for a 6-4, 6-2 takedown of San Diego's #77 Nikola Bubnic on court one in the evening match.
Next week, USC heads over to crosstown rival UCLA for a 3 p.m. match on Wednesday (Feb. 29) against the Bruins. Then it's down to La Jolla for action at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships March 2-4.
