CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. -- The No. 1 USC men's tennis team bounced back from taking its first loss of the year yesterday with a powerful effort against No. 3 UCLA today at the ITA National Indoor Championships. The Trojans pulls out of a tight doubles point and streaked to the win with a set of strong singles victories over the Bruins, improving USC's overall record to 8-1 on the year.
At the No. 3 doubles position, USC's Peter Lucassen / Jaak Poldma teamed up for an 8-6 upset win over #36 Brooklyn/Stewart to give USC an early lift. UCLA countered by taking the No. 2 doubles match 8-6 as Farah/McNaughton fell, but the Trojans secured the point on a tense tiebreaker with Daniel Nguyen / JT Sundling winning 9-8 (4) at No. 1 over Abid/Seguso to make it 1-0 USC.
In singles, #14 Robert Farah got a win after going ahead 6-1 against Haythem Abid, who retired from the match before the second set. At No. 3, #116 Jaak Poldma put USC in good position with a smooth 6-0, 6-3 win over #118 Nick Meister for a 3-0 USC advantage. And locking down the win for USC was Peter Lucassen -- playing in his first rivalry match as a Trojan -- who upended Matt Brooklyn 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. That rounded out the win for the Trojans, who avenged a loss to the last team to beat USC last season before the Trojans went on to win the 2009 NCAA Championships.
