Quiroz, Wang Push Through To Sherwood Singles Quarterfinals|
Jan. 16, 2015
PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- The USC men's tennis team dug in for its first official action of 2015 with a trip to the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, engaging in some individual competition to kick off the year. It was just singles on tap for day one, with doubles play getting underway tomorrow. USC had nine Trojans in the mix for singles, with six nabbing wins in the first round. In the Round of 16, it was USC seniors Roberto Quiroz and Jonny Wang who punched their tickets through to tomorrow's singles quarterfinals.
As competition kicked off today, the defending NCAA champs saw a strong continent tally wins in their singles openers. Seniors Quiroz and Wang were joined by victorious junior Max de Vroome, sophomores Rob Bellamy and Nick Crystal and freshman Thibault Forget, whose first match as a Trojan was a straight-set success over Strobel of Stanford. Freshman Tanner Smith, sophomore Connor Farren and senior Eric Johnson would fall in their starters to move into the consolation bracket.
Of the six Trojans who moved through to the afternoon's Round of 16, only Quiroz and Wang were able to finish off their opponents. Both of their wins came in three-setters. So, too, did de Vroome, Crystal and Forget wind up in three-set battles, upended in the final set to fall short of a quarterfinal spot tomorrow.
