    USC Men Sweep Through NCAA Singles Opening Round

    Trojan seniors take no prisoners on first day of singles play in Waco.

    THIS SEASON: Jonny Wang enters his final season at USC.

    2013-14 SEASON: Wang finished his junior season ranked No. 61 in the nation in singles... Reached the second round of NCAA Singles... Went 21-8 overall in singles, going 11-2 in dual matches... Played primarily at the No. 5 singles spot, going 6-1 there... Also played at No. 3 (2-0) and No. 6 (3-1)... In doubles, went 4-4 overall with a 2-2 mark in dual matches... Went 2-3 with Rob Bellamy and 1-0 with Michael Grant... In the fall, worked through ITA Al-American qualifying and reached the main draw's Round of 32... Entered the preseason ranked No. 63 in the nation in ITA singles.

    2012-13 SEASON: Wang finished his sophomore season ranked No. 90 in the nation in ITA singles... Reached the ITA Southwest Regional singles quarterfinals... Went 30-7 overall in singles, going 15-3 in dual matches... Played primarily at the No. 6 position, going 8-1... Also played at No. 4 (4-1) and No. 5 (3-1)... Was a perfect 6-0 in Pac-12 dual-match singles... Had the clinching singles victory in four dual matches... In doubles, was 9-3 overall and 3-1 in dual matches... Went 5-1 overall and 1-0 in dual matches with Max de Vroome... Was 4-3 overall and 2-1 in dual matches with Michael Grant... In the fall, won the SDSU Fall Invitational doubles championship and reached the semifinals of the Battle in the Bay... Highest season rank was No. 86 in singles on March 26.

    2011-12 SEASON: Wang went 14-8 overall and was 2-0 in dual-match singles as a true freshman... Competed in dual matches vs. UC Santa Barbara and San Diego State... In doubles, went 4-7 overall, going 3-3 with Eric Johnson and 1-4 with Corey Smith... In the fall, reached the semifinals of the Fresno State Bulldog Classic and reached the consolation final of the SoCal Intercollegiates.

    HIGH SCHOOL: Wang graduated from San Marino (Calif.) High School... Was a 2011 Ojai CIF singles finalist and the 2008-2011 Rio Hondo League Champion... Named Pasadena Star News Player of the Year from 2008-2011... Won the 2009 Boys National Open Championship and the 2007 Boys 14s National Open Singles Championship... Ranked 11th in the nation in boys 16s singles.

    PERSONAL: Jonny Wang was born April 14, 1993... Son of Michael and Amy... Has a brother, Charles, and a sister, Mimi... Says winning the Southern California Sportsmanship award for the 16-age division was his most thrilling sports experience... Enjoys watching movies, swimming and traveling in his free time... Lists Fabrice Santoro as his biggest sports hero because of his innovative and different style... Majoring in business administration, he would like to work on Wall Street after he graduates.
