The 2007-08 USC men's and women's swimming and diving teams kicked off the fall schedule with the always competitive and spirited Cardinal and Gold intrasquad meet at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium on Friday (Sept. 21).

The women's Gold team defeated its Cardinal rivals, 127-119, while the men's Gold squad won going away, 157-72.

In the exhibition event whose times do not count toward NCAA standards, multi-event winners included senior Whitney Hentzen (500y and 1000y free), junior Rachael Waller (100y and 200y free), junior Rebecca Soni (100y and 200y breast), junior Vanni Mangoni (200y IM, 200y breast), freshman Dillon Connolly (100y and 200y breast) and senior Brandon Lovell (100y and 200y fly).

"It's great to get the season going with an event like this," USC second-year head coach Dave Salo said. "It's good for team bonding, good to give the freshmen a taste of what dual meets are all about, good to shake off the rust a bit. We've got a long way to go, but this is a good start."

The women's dual meet season officially begins on Oct. 12 with a dual-meet against Pac-10 rival Oregon State at noon. A week later, both the men's and women's squads compete at Notre Dame at 1 p.m. CST (the same day as the USC-Notre Dame football game).
