Six Trojans On USA Swimming "30 Most Influential" List|
July 28, 2015
USA Swimming announced its list of the "30 Most Influential People in Swimming over the Past 30 Years" today and USC swimmers and coaches -- led by current head coach Dave Salo -- accounted for an impressive six members of the elite squad.
In addition to Salo on the list are legendary Trojan head coaches Peter Daland and Mark Schubert, former USC All-American and current Cal head women's coach Teri McKeever, former USC assistant coach, Trojan graduate and all-time swimming great Janet Evans and current volunteer assistant coach Jon Urbanchek.
USA Swimming released the list to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its partnership with Speedo USA. Click here for the complete list.
Salo, who in 2015 completed his ninth season as the men's and women's swimming and diving teams head coach, is currently serving as the U.S. women's head coach for the 2015 FINA World Championships after also doing so in 2013. He completed his third U.S. Olympic staff coaching assignment when he served as a 2012 U.S. Olympic women's swim team assistant coach.
The Trojans have won a combined 23 NCAA men's and women's swimming individual and relay titles under Salo. In March, USC won its first men's Pac-12 title since 1979.
Like Salo, Daland and Schubert had success both at USC and on the national and international level. Daland led USC to nine NCAA titles, 17 league crowns and 93 NCAA individual and relay titles. Schubert guided Troy to its only women's NCAA crown as well as to numerous women's and men's NCAA and conference individual titles.
McKeever, an All-American at USC in 1980 and 1981, has had great success as the head women's swimming and diving coach at California for more than two decades and has won four NCAA team titles. Evans is one of USA Swimming's most decorated Olympians of all time. She's a four-time Olympic gold medalist and the only female swimmer to have held three concurrent world records: 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle.
Completing USC's roll call on the iconic USA team is Urbanchek, who completed his third year as a Trojan volunteer coach in March. He directed the Michigan men's swimming and diving team from 1982-2004, winning an NCAA title in 1995.
Daland, Schubert, Evans and Urbanchek are all members of the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
