THIS SEASON: One of USC's top sprinters ever, senior co-captain and four-time career All-American Gabe Woodward will look to be major factor in both individual events and relays at the NCAA Championships.
1999-2000: For the second consecutive year, Gabe Woodward, as a 1999-2000 junior, earned a pair of All-American honors, both on relays, at the 2000 NCAA Championships. He anchored both the fifth-place 400m medley relay and the seventh-place 400m freestyle relay teams. It was Woodward's prelim anchor split in the 400m free relay of 48.01 that clinched the unit's spot in the finals. Individually, Woodward tied for 28th in the 50m free (22.49) and tied for 31st in the 100m free (49.75). He also swam on USC's 13th-place 200m medley relay and 200m free relay teams. At the 2000 Pacific-10 Conference Championships, Woodward was fourth in the 100y free (43.81), sixth in the 50y free (20.17) and 29th in the 200y free (1:41.99). He also anchored USC's 400y medley relay and led off the 400y free relay, both of which finished third. He finished with USC's top time in the 50y free (19.96), 100y free (43.81) and the 50m free (22.49) and 100m free (49.48). At the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, Woodward finished tied for 46th in the 50m free (23.71) and was 56th in the 100m free (51.86). He is the third-fastest Trojan ever in the 50y free (19.87) and the sixth-fastest Trojan ever in the 100y free (43.60). At the 2000 team banquet, Woodward was honored with the Matthew Moneymaker Endowed Scholarship Award.
1998-99: Woodward earned a pair of All-American honors as a 1998-99 sophomore, both coming on relays. He helped USC to a fifth-place mark in the 400-yard medley relay and a sixth-place mark in the 400-yard free relay. He scored his first career NCAA points with a 14th-place showing in the 100y free (43.98). He just missed qualifying for the consolation finals in the 50y free, taking 17th (19.87) with a personal best. He also was 28th in the 200y free (1:38.27) with another personal best, and led-off USC's ninth-place 200y free relay. He finished fourth at the 1999 Pac-10s in the 100y free (43.60, sixth-fastest individual in USC history), ninth in the 200y free (1:38.51) and 18th in the 50y free (20.53). He competed for the U.S. at the 1999 World University Games, anchoring the 400m medley relay and leading off the 400m free relay prelim. He earned a gold in the medley and a bronze in the free. At the 1999 U.S. Summer Nationals, his efforts were topped with a 19th-place showing in the 100m free (51:20, personal best). At the 1998 U.S. Open, Woodward had a pair of 11th-place finishes in the 50m free (23.03) and the 100m free (50.58).
1997-98: Woodward competed in five events at the Pacific-10 Championships as a 1997-98 freshman. He posted a pair of 12th-place marks in the 100y (45.13) and 200y (1:40.80) frees and took 27th in the 50y free (20.65). He also swam on USC's third-place 200y free and its fourth-place 200y medley relays. At the 1998 U.S. Spring Nationals, Woodward was a member of USC's national-title winning 400m free relay. He also took 18th in the 100m free (52.24), 21st in the 50m free (23.98), 28th in the 200m free (1:57.40) and 47th in the 100m fly (58.68). He competed in two events at the 1998 U.S. Summer Nationals. At the 1997 U.S. Open, Woodward took 44th in the 50m free (24.68), 47th in the 100m free (53.89), 51st in the 100m fly (1:00.28) and 61st in the 200m free (1:59.62).
HIGH SCHOOL: Woodward, who prepped at Stockdale High in Bakersfield, Calif., was a five-time All-American there and a three-time All-Area swimmer. He was also a four-time CIF individual champion and a U.S. Swimming Academic All-American. He competed at the U.S. Nationals in 1997, posting a pair of 53rd-place finishes in the 50m (24.23) and the 100m free (52.57).
PERSONAL: He was born on July 6, 1979, and is majoring in education. His brother Beau is a former USC swimmer.
