THIS SEASON: A 2000-2001 senior, Nick Smith was voted a co-captain for the Trojans for the second consecutive season. He is one of the Trojans top freestyle sprinters who has shown he can be a contributing point scorer at the Pac-10 level or beyond.
1999-2000: Smith, as a 1999-2000 junior co-captain, raced in three events at the 2000 Pac-10 Championships. He took 13th in the 200y free (1:38.90), 15th in the 100y free (45.30) and 21st in the 50y free (20.85).
1998-99: Smith competed in three events at the 1999 Pac-10s as a 1998-99 sophomore, finishing 24th in the 200y free (1:41.09), 26th in the 100y free (45.99) and 34th in the 50y free (21.64). His best 50y free of the year, 20.65 against UC Santa Barbara, was the Trojans' third-best time of the year.
1997-98: Smith competed in three events at the 1998 Pac-10 Championships as a 1997-98 freshman. He took 16th in the 200y free (1:40.56), 21st in the 100y free (46.03) and 36th in the 50y free (21.73).
HIGH SCHOOL: Smith prepped at Chaminade High in Canoga Park, Calif. He was a 10-time varsity lettermen in football (he played quarterback four years), basketball and swimming. He posted All-American consideration time in the 100y free. He was the Mission League champion in 1997 in the 100y free, earning first-team all-league honors. He was also a finalist in the 100y at the CIF championships as a junior and a senior. He was also All-League in football twice and basketball once.
PERSONAL: His birthday is Sept. 15, 1978. He is a business marketing major. Smith is a "diehard" angler who likes to go fishing at least once a week. He also enjoys surfing and kayaking in his spare time. He lists John Elway as his biggest sports hero. His brother-in-law, Wolfgang Von Aspe, played football at USC, lettering in 1994.
