THIS SEASON: A fantastic breaststroker and the former USC record holder in the 100y breast, 2000-2001 senior Slawek Richter will challenge for All-American honors in both breast events.

1999-2000: Richter competed in three individual events at the 2000 NCAA Championships, finishing 21st in the 100m breast (1:01.60, sc), 28th in the 200m breast (2:16.81, sc) and 37th in the 200m IM (2:02.38, sc). He also swam on USC's 200m medley relay that reached the consolation finals. At the 2000 Pac-10 Championships, Richter actually went under his old USC record in the 100y breast of 54.44, but was defeated by teammate Ryosuke Imai. He took third in 54.11, making him the second-fastest Trojan ever in the event. In the 200y breast, Richter, who is the sixth-fastest USC swimmer in the event (1:59.32) was eighth in 2:00.31. He was also eighth in the 200y IM in 1:49.57. He also competed in four events at the 1999 U.S. Open. At the 2000 team banquet, Richter won the Mike Nyeholt/Giles Pellerin Endowed Scholarship Award.

1998-99: Richter had a breakthrough sophomore year and became the fastest Trojan ever (at the time) in the 100y breast when he swam a then-USC 54.44 for a sixth-place finish at the 1999 NCAA Championships. It was the second time he broke the USC record, the first coming on his second-place finish at the 1999 Pac-10s. Richter, named USC's Most Improved Swimmer, finished the season as a two-time All-American, helping USC to a fifth-place mark in the 400y medley relay in addition to his record at NCAAs. He also took 19th in the 200y breast (2:00.96). At the Pac-10s, Richter complemented his second-place mark in the 100y breast with a fourth-place showing in the 200y breast (1:59.32), a performance that made him the sixth-best Trojan ever in the event. He was also 18th in the 200y IM (1:49.52). At the 1998 U.S. Open, Richter took 23rd in the 100m breast (1:05.94, SC) and 24th in the 200m IM (2:09.67, SC). He also competed at the 1999 World University Games.

1997-98: Richter came on toward the end of his 1997-98 freshman campaign and posted NCAA consideration times in both the 100y (56.08) and the 200y (2:01.84) breasts, as well as in the 200y IM (1:49.82). His 200y breast mark was USC's best of the year. Richter competed in three events at the 1998 Pac-10 Championships. He took sixth in the 200y breast (2:02.12), seventh in the 100y breast (56.08) and 18th in the 200y IM (1:49.82). At the 1997 U.S. Open, Richter took 42nd in the 100m breast (1:10.29), 48th in the 200m breast (2:36.07) and 76th in the 200m free (2:01.99).

HIGH SCHOOL: Richter was a three-time All-American at Mission Viejo (Calif.) High, earning those honors in the 50y free, 100y breast and the 200y IM. His club team, the Mission Viejo Nadadores, won a national team title in 1997. He competed for the Polish Junior National Team in 1995.

PERSONAL: Richter was born Oct. 3, 1978. He is an economics major. He enjoys fishing.
