THIS SEASON: One of the team's hardest workers, 2009 junior co-captain James Martin has made big strides in his first two years with the Trojans and strives to earn his first trip to the NCAA Championships. He is among USC's top backstrokers and medley swimmers.
2008: Martin, as a 2008 sophomore, was one of only two Trojans to reach a final at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships, taking eighth in the 400y IM (3:52.80). He was also 11th in the 200y back (1:46.75) and 19th in the 200y IM (1:49.16) ... At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, Martin was 47th in the 200m back (2:06.32).
2007: Martin competed in three events at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships as a freshman. He was 12th in the 200y back (1:48.41), 14th in the 400y IM (3:59.41) and 19th in the 200y IM (1:51.13). All three times were season bests for Martin, whose medley times made him the second fastest Trojan on the year in both races.
HIGH SCHOOL: Martin prepped at Crescenta Valley High in La Crescenta, Calif., where he was a three-time All-American and earned All-CIF honors as a senior ... At the 2006 U.S. National Championships he was 42nd in the 200m back.
CLUB: California Aquatics.
PERSONAL: He was born on May 5, 1988.
