THIS SEASON: Remaining one of the most versatile swimmers in the Pac-10, 2000-2001 senior Philippe Demers is coming off of his second consecutive All-American season and will look to make it three in a row this year.
1999-2000: Demers earned a pair of All-American honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships as part of USC's 400m medley and free relays. He reached the consolation finals of the 200m fly and also competed in the 200m IM and 200m free. He posted USC's top time this last year in the 200y fly (1:45.09, personal best, fifth-fastest Trojan in school history). At the 2000 Pac-10 Championships, Demers was fourth in the 200y fly (1:45.48), 15th in the 200y free (1:40.13) and 16th in the 200y IM (1:51.68). His 200y free time of 1:36.21 ties him as the ninth fastest Trojan ever in the event.
1998-99: Demers was a three-time All-American as a sophomore in 1998-99, including an eighth-place finish in the 200y free (1:38.50, 1:36.22 in prelims). His other All-American honors came as part of USC's second-place 800y and sixth-place 400y free relays. Demers also was 17th in the 200y fly (1:46.87) and 43rd in the 200y IM (1:50.56). He won his first career conference title at the 1999 Pac-10 Championships, winning the 200y fly in 1:45.62. Almost as impressive was Demers' third-place showing in the 200y free (1:36.21), less than a second off of teammate Bela Szabados' winning time. In addition, Demers swam the third leg of USC's Pac-10-winning 800y free relay team. Demers was a U.S. team captain and flag bearer at the 1999 World Short Course Championships. He was part of the U.S.'s eighth-place 400m free relay team and finished 14th in the 200m fly (1:58.77). He swam in three events at the 1999 U.S. Summer Nationals, highlighted by a fifth-place mark in the 200m fly (2:01.80).
1997-98: Demers was a huge presence for the Trojans as a 1997-98 freshman and was the only USC swimmer to score in three individual events at the 1998 NCAA Championships. Demers finished ninth in the 200y free (1:36.67), 10th in the 200 fly (1:46.00 — USC's fastest time of the year) and 15th in the 200y IM (1:49.44). Demers earned a pair of All-American honors as a member of USC's fourth-place 800y free relay and its fifth-place and USC-record-breaking 200y medley relay and also swam on USC's 200y and 400y free relays that reached the consolation finals. Demers posted two second-place finishes in the 200y fly and the 200y free at the Pac-10 Championships. He also took ninth in the 200y IM and led off USC's second-place 800y free relay. Demers competed in four events at the 1998 Summer Nationals, highlighted by a 12th-place finish in the 200m fly (2:02.34). At the 1997 U.S. Open, Demers' best finish was ninth in the 200m fly (2:03.55). He also swam on USC's winning 800m free relay.
HIGH SCHOOL: A four-time prep All-American at Santa Margarita Catholic High in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Demers was named a two-time High School Swimmer of the Year by the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times. He was a three-time CIF Southern Section Division I champion in the 100y and 200y fly as a sophomore, junior and senior and was the swimmer of the meet at CIF his last two years. At the U.S.S. Nationals in 1997, Demers competed in four events: 200m fly (12th), 200m free (19th), 100m free (t-35th) and 100m fly (66th). As a junior in 1996, he took fourth in the 200m fly at U.S. Nationals.
