Berkeley, Calif. - Kholev, Horvath and Mambo Win Titles, USC Men In Fifth Place With 42 Points After First Day
Field Finals
Hammer: Senior Norbert Horvath won his third consecutive Pac-10 hammer title with a season-best mark of 230-1. Horvath is now the third athlete ever to win three straight Pac-10 hammer titles, joining former Trojan and Olympic gold medalist Balazs Kiss (1993-96) and Scott Neilson of Washington (1976-79). Freshman Michael Murray finished sixth after throwing 191-1, equaling his personal-best. USC picked up 13 points total in the hammer.
Long Jump: Senior Djeke Mambo won the Pac-10 long jump championship with a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 25-2 3/4. He becomes USC's first long jump champ at the conference meet since Kyle Beck in 1995.
Mambo on his winning jump: "When I hit it, it felt good. It was a little harder to jump earlier because the wind was changing all the time. I got lucky because I got some good wind on my third jump."
Pole Vault: Senior Dennis Kholev won the Pac-10 pole vault championship, breaking his own school record with a height of 18-4 1/2 (third-best in the nation). Kholev is USC's first Pac-10 champion in the vault since Lance Betson in 1988. Sophomore Jeff Ryan finished seventh with a height of 16-7 1/4 to give the Trojans 12 total points in the vault.
Track Finals
3000mSC: Sophomore Andrew Knutsen finished 15th in a time of 9:48.13.
Track Prelim Highlights
400m relay: The USC squad of Miguel Fletcher, Devon Ward, Darrell Rideaux and Sultan McCullough won its heat in 39.96, the fastest time of the day.
110m HH: Sophomore Ryan Wilson, the defending Pac-10 champion, advanced to the finals in a wind-aided time of 14.00 (third fastest of the day). Senior Djeke Mambo ran a wind-aided 14.02 to also advance.
100m: Juniors Sultan McCullough (10.27) and Devon Ward (10.46) and sophomore Darrell Rideaux (10.49) each advanced to the finals of the 100m.
200m: Senior Andre Ammons (20.90) and junior Devon Ward (2115) advanced to the 200m finals for USC.
400m: Ammons advanced to the final of the 400m, winning his heat in the fastest time of the day (46.52).
800m: Junior Kevin Elliot qualified for the finals of the 800m with a time of 1:48.55.
