    USC Men's Golf Tied for Eighth after Prestige at PGA West 1st Round

    The USC men's golf team finished tied for eighth at one-over 289 after the 1st round of the 2011 The Prestige at PGA West on Sunday at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.

    Junior Sam Smith paced the Trojans by finishing tied for twelfth with a two-under 70. His five birdies, including four on the back nine, were tied for the seventh most on the day.

    Junior Martin Trainer shot an even 72, which was tied for twenty-eighth, after recording back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12.

    Sophomore Ramsey Sahyoun finished at one-over 73, senior Steve Lim shot a two-over 74, and sophomore Jeffrey Kang ended with a four-over 76.

    Oregon finished the day in first place at nine-under 279, while Stanford and Washington tied for second at eight-under 280.

    This is the season opener for the 2011 Pac-10 champion Trojans, who are ranked No. 8 in the preseason rankings, after being rained out in the first event.

    The second round begins with a shotgun start on Monday at 12:30 p.m. (PT).
