Six Trojans in all competed at various qualifying tournaments, with the top three golfers at each site advancing to the championships . Woerner, who completed his eligibility last season, shot 141 (66,75) to lead the pack at Sharon Heights CC in Menlo Park, Calif., while Webb, a senior, shot 139 (69, 70) to finish first at Del Rio CC in Modesto, Calif. Sophomore Leary also finished atop the leaderboard as he shot a 141 (68,73) at Mission Viejo CC in Mission Viejo, Calif. Jones, a junior, finished in second place with a 141 (70,71) at Pauma Valley CC in Pauma Valley, Calif.
Two other Trojans just missed qualifying, as graduating-senior Jorge Corral and sophomore Kevin Stadler each fell one stroke short.
The championship gets underway with 312 players competing in 36 holes of stroke-play competition on Aug. 16 and Aug. 17 at Spyglass Hill GC and Pebble Beach GL to determine the 64 competitors that go forward into match play. Match play competition begins on Aug. 18 and continues through Aug. 22 at Pebble Beach GL.
Jones, Webb, Leary and Stadler all return to USC in the fall as the Trojans begin the 1999-2000 season on Sept. 13-14 at the Oregon State University Northwest Classic.
