Feb. 9, 2012
Women's Tennis: Sophomore Kaitlyn Christian helped anchor the Trojans to their best start since 2007 with two more shutout wins last week, matching the 2007 opening of four 7-0 victories and one 6-1 finish through the first five matches of the year. For her efforts on both the singles and doubles court, Christian has earned her first career selection as Pac-12 Player of the Week. Christian didn't lose a single set in singles last week, and also won out in doubles as USC topped #34 Saint Mary's and #27 Pepperdine with shutouts. Her singles wins from her No. 4 position were both dominating. #99 Christian beat Anna Chkhikvishili 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday, then blasted Arianna Colffer 6-1, 6-2 on Saturday. Teamed up in doubles with Sabrina Santamaria at the No. 1 position, the #3 pair served up 8-4 wins in both matches. Christian is a perfect 5-0 in dual-match singles now with a 13-4 overall record. In doubles with Santamaria, she holds a 18-3 overall record with a 3-0 dual-match record.
Men's Golf: Sophomore Jeffrey Kang won a one-hole playoff to claim his first collegiate title and helped lead the No. 11 USC men's golf team to second-place on the final day of the 22nd annual Amer Ari at Waikoloa (Hi.) Beach Resort on Friday (Feb. 3). Kang finished at 11-under 205 (67-69-69), tied with Texas's Jordan Spieth. On the first playoff hole, Kang carded a par for the title. His final round featured four birdies with only a bogey on 16. His win marked his second straight top 6 finish and the fifth top 6 result of his career.
