Nov. 7, 2012
Sophomore Anthony Paolucci fired a final-round 69 to pace No. 8 USC to a third-place finish at the Gifford Collegiate-CordeValle in San Martin, Calif., on Wednesday (Nov. 7) in USC's final action of the fall season.
In the event in which six golfers play and the top five scorers count, USC took third at 17-over 1082 (366-352-364), the Trojans' third third-place finish in three stroke-play events. Host-UCLA led wire-to-wire and won at 3-under 1062 (350-349-363) while Stanford was second at 5-over 1070 (353-355-362).
Paolucci, who entered the day tied for ninth, opened with a bogey on 15 in the shotgun start, but sunk five birdies the rest of the way en route to a 2-under final round and a tie for a season-best fifth at 2-under 211 (71-71-69).
Senior Sam Smith tied for a season-best 13th at 3-over 216 (76-67-73) with two birdies during his final round.
Freshman Yi Keun Chang (70-73-75) and junior Ramsey Sahyoun (76-70-72) tied for 20th at 5-over 218. Chang, who posted two top 10 finishes earlier in the fall, was 1-under after 13 holes but ran into trouble over his final five to finish the round at 4-over. Sahyoun had four birdies during his mixed bag of a final round.
Junior Jeffrey Kang tied for 31st at 7-over 220 and senior Stewart Hagestad tied for 65th at 19-over 232 (75-78-79). Hagestad did have an eagle on the par 4 8th hole while Kang had two birdies in his round.
