Smith 67 Leads USC Into Fourth At Gifford Collegiate|

Senior Sam Smith fired a 4-under 67 while junior Ramsey Sahyoun was also under par to lead No. 8 USC to the second lowest round during the second day of the Gifford Collegiate-CordeValle in San Martin, Calif., on Tuesday (Nov. 6).
In the event in which six golfers play and the top five scorers count, USC turned in a 3-under middle round to move into fourth at a combined 8-over 718 (366-352). UCLA (11-under 699), however, had the only round better than USC and extended its lead. The Bruins are nine better than second-place Stanford (708), 17 better than third-place Tennessee (716) and 19 ahead of the Trojans.
Sophomore Anthony Paolucci leads USC on the leader board, tied for ninth at 142 (71-71). He mixed three birdies with three pars on a steady day.
Smith (76-67) moved into a tie for 14th with freshman Yi Keun Chang (70-73) at 1-over 143. Smith opened with five birdies on the first nine holes for a 5-under front 9 and was solid on the back at 1-over. Chang was 2-under through 11 before finishing the round at 2-over.
Junior Jeffrey Kang is tied for 27th at 3-over 145 (74-71). He sank three birdies today, including one on 18 to even his second round.
Sahyoun moved up to a tie for 33rd at 4-over 146 (76-70). He opened at 4-under after eight holes, fell back to par, but got back into the red with a birdie on 18. Senior Stewart Hagestad is tied for 63rd at 11-over 153 (75-78). Despite a tough round, he closed with birdies on 16 and 18.
