Nov. 4, 2014
Freshmen Jonah Texeira and Sean Crocker fired a 67 and 68, respectively, while senior Paul Smith joined them in the top 6 as the trio helped No. 18 USC extend its lead to three strokes after the second round of the Gifford Collegiate at Cordevalle in San Martin, Calif., on Tuesday (Nov. 4).
The Trojans, in the six-player, count-five format, combined for a 10-under 345 second round and are now 12-under 698 (353-345), three ahead of second-place No. 8 UCLA and 15 better than third-place Northwestern. USC is coming off a win in its previous event (the Bill Cullum Invitational) and looking for its fourth top 2 finish in five fall events.
Crocker, seeking his third top 4 finish this fall, is tied for second at 5-under 137 (69-68) after his team-best eighth round in the 60s this year. He is one shot off the lead. The freshman was 4-under on the front 9 with five birdies and 1-over on the back.
Texeira (73-67) and Smith (67-73) are tied for sixth at 2-under 140. Texeira was even on his front 9 and had four birdies in a 4-under back 9 for his fifth round in the 60s this year. Smith was 2-under through 11 before some hiccups on the back 9.
Sophomore Rico Hoey is tied for 18th at 1-over 143 (74-69) after his fifth round in the 60s. He bogeyed 1 but finished the rest of the round at 3-under. Senior Eric Sugimoto is tied for 26th at 2-over 144 (70-74) while junior Bobby Gojuangco is tied for 29th (77-68). Gojunagco bounced back from a tough first round with a 3-under second round, including a 4-under front 9.
Sophomore Danny Ochoa, playing individually, is tied for 62nd at 10-over 152 (78-74).
