Oct. 18, 2013
Freshman Rico Hoey fired a 2-under 70, including a hole-in-one on the par 3 3rd hole, to lead the USC men's golf team in the first round of the U.S. Collegiate Classic on Thursday (Oct. 17) at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.
The Trojans fired a combined 2-over 290 for ninth place in the 15-team field, good for ninth, 11 back of host Georgia Tech in a stacked field that includes nine teams ranked in Golfstat's Top 25.
Hoey, four back of first, aced the 3rd hole thanks to a six iron that landed just short and left of the cup and inched in from there. He balanced two birdies against two bogeys for the rest of his round.
Senior Jeffrey Kang is tied for 25th at even 72. He rallied from a double bogey on 5 with four birdies against two bogeys the rest of the round.
Junior Anthony Paolucci is tied for 35th at 1-over 73, which included three birdies on the day. Junior Paul Smith is tied for 48th at 3-over 75 while freshman Danny Ochoa is tied for 59th at 4-over 76.
USC begins its second-round action at 10:40 a.m.
