    Junior Matt Giles tied for 10th while freshman Martin Trainer tied for 19th to lead the USC men's golf team on the final day of the season-opening 2009 Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 20) at the Olympia Fields (Ill.) C.C.

    ASU won the event at 3-over 870 with Oklahoma State second (872) and Texas third (875). USC tied for eighth at 43-over 883 (295-290-298).

    USC has a revamped lineup that is trying to replace three All-Americans who are gone from the 2008 squad (Jamie Lovemark, Tom Glissmeyer and Tim Sluiter).

    Giles is the lone regular starter upperclassman. The two-time All-American from Australia tied for 10th at 6-over 216 (74-67-75).

    Three true freshmen finished behind him, led by Trainer's 10-over 220 (73-72-75). T.J. Vogel tied for 33rd at 13-over 223 (74-74-75) while Sam Smith tied for 45th at 17-over 227 (74-77-76).

    Sophomore Steve Lim had USC's best final round and finished tied for 52nd at 19-over 229 (77-79-73).

    USC is next up at the 2009 Fall Preview, set for Sept. 27-28 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
