Sophomore Anthony Paolucci fired a 1-under 69 while senior Sam Smith and freshman Yi Keun Chang were each 1-over to lead No. 13 USC during the first round of the 2013 NCAA Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday (May 28) at the Capital City Club/Crabapple Course in Atlanta, hosted by Georgia Tech.
The Trojans, however, weren't as steady at the bottom of the lineup and finished the day tied for 25th at 11-over 291. Only the top eight teams after 54 holes will advance to a three-day match play tournament for the NCAA title and the Trojans have some work to do, 12 shots off the pace with 17 teams between them and the top 8.
Arizona State leads the event at 10-under 270 with host Georgia Tech at 6-under 274 and 2012 finalist Alabama third at 5-under 275.
Paolucci stood out for USC today and is tied for 20th. He was 1-under going out with a birdie on the par 4 5th hole and was even on the back with birdies on 13 and 18.
Smith, who has led USC in its last five events, was 2-under through 5 and 1-under on the front before going 2-over on the back. Chang was 2-under through 7 before bogeys on 8 and 9 and was 1-over on the back with a bogey on 11. The duo is tied for 49th overall.
Senior Stewart Hagestad (10-over 80) and junior Jeffrey Kang (13-over 83) had a rough go at it today and will look to shake it off tomorrow when the Trojans tee off starting at 8:10 a.m. ET on Wednesday.
