Junior Anthony Paolucci carded a 1-over 73 to lead the No. 16 USC men's golf team to a tie for fifth place after the first round of the NCAA Championships Regional at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
USC, seeking its eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA final, combined for a 14-over 302 and are 10 back of first-round leader UAB (292). Clemson and Kent State are tied for third at 11-over 299 while Jacksonville State is tied with USC. Cal, the top seed in the regional, is seventh at 17-over 305.
Five teams in each NCAA regional - three with 13 teams and three with 14 teams -- and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship final, hosted by Wichita State, May 23-28, in Hutchinson, Kan.
Paolucci was 1-under going out and 2-over coming home with three birdies in his first round. He is in a five-way tie for sixth, four back of first.
Freshman Rico Hoey and junior Paul Smith are tied for 16th at 3-over 75. Hoey was 3-over through 8 before back-to-back birdies on 9 and 10. He bogeyed 16 and 18 for his final 3-over total. Smith was 4-over through 5 after a triple on the fourth hole, but settled down and finished the final 13 holes at 1-under.
