Stanford, Calif. - The No. 6 USC men's golf team broke Arizona State's stranglehold on the Pac-10 Championships on Sunday, as the Trojans won the title by four strokes for their first Pac-10 team title since 1986 at the 2001 Pac-10 Men's Golf Championships held on Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif., this past weekend (April 27-29).
The Sun Devils had won six team titles in a row before the Trojans broke their string. USC shot a four-round total of 1400, four strokes ahead of ASU (1404). Arizona was third (1408), followed by Washington (1411) and UCLA (1430).
The win was USC's third team title this season and 10th overall under coach Kurt Schuette. USC has now won 16 Pac-10 golf championships--more than any other school.
Ricky Barnes (268) of Arizona won the individual title, three strokes ahead of USC's Hunter Mahan. Mahan, a freshman from McKinney, Tex., shot rounds of 68, 69, 67 and 67 to finish with a total of 271. Matt Jones of Arizona State was third (273), followed by Corey Prugh of Washington (275), then Trojan Alex Kuyumjian and Arizona's Chris Nallen in fifth. Kuyumjian shot a final round of 66 to surge into the top five.
Also for the Trojans, Kevin Stadler tied for 12th (283), Nick Jones tied for 19th (285), David Oh tied for 37th (292) and Roderick Staunton tied for 54th (297).
The Trojans are next in action at the NCAA West Regionals hosted by Oregon State at Trysting Tree Country Club in Corvallis, Ore., on May 17-19.
