Smith 2nd, No. 20 USC 4th After Pac-12 Championships 3rd Round|
April 26, 2014
Junior Paul Smith continued his strong play and is second at 2-under while the No. 20 Trojans are in fourth after the third round of the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships on Saturday (April 26) at The Galley at Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz.
The Trojans, who battled strong winds throughout today's play, combined for a third-round 19-over 379 and are now 39-over 1119 (377-363-379). Stanford has built a 21-stroke lead at 3-over 1083 while Cal (1104) and Washington (107) are second and third, respectively.
Smith, the younger brother of former Trojan All-American Sam Smith, followed his pair of 71s Friday with a par 72 Saturday and is in second at 2-under 214 (71-71-72). He used a pair of eagles on the par 5 2nd and the par 4 8th to offset missteps on an even front 9 and had one birdie and one bogey on the back. He is five back of Stanford's Patrick Rodgers.
Junior Eric Sugimoto is tied for eighth at 3-over 219 (74-72-73). In a steady round, he was 1-over going out and even coming in with a birdie on 17.
Action concludes Sunday.
