Freshman Rico Hoey fired a 4-under 66 - which included two eagles -- to lead No. 23 USC during the first round of The Goodwin at the Stanford (Calif.) G.C. on Friday (March 28).
The Trojans combined for a 2-under 278 for fifth, 10 back of host Stanford. St. Mary's was second (271), Oregon finished third (273) and UCLA was fourth (277).
Hoey's first round was his team-best 10th round in the 60s this season as he seeks his team-best sixth top 7 finish this season. In addition to his pair of eagles on the par 5 7th and 16th holes, Hoey birdied 1 and 10 and bogeyed 3 and 6. He is in a four-way tie for third, three off the lead.
Junior Anthony Paolucci is tied for 26th at even 70. He was 1-over going out with a birdie and an eagle on the front 9 and 1-under coming home thanks to two birdies. He's after his fifth top 9 this year.
