Senior Sam Smith carded a 2-under 70 to lead No. 7 USC during a miserably cold, windy and wet first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters at the Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas on Friday (March 8).

USC, which came in with back-to-back first place finishes in its last two events, combined for a 5-over 293 for eighth, eight back of first place Cal (285) and four out of third.

Smith, who led USC in its previous opening round last week at North Ranch with a first-round 65, sunk six birdies against four bogeys to tie for fifth, four back of the lead.

Freshman Yi Keun Chang, who won the individual title last week, is tied for 19th at 1-over 73 after a steady two-birdie, three-bogey round. Junior Ramsey Sahyoun is tied for 28th at 2-over 74. He was 2-under through 12 holes but he lost four strokes over the final six holes.

Sophomore Anthony Paolucci is tied for 51st at 4-over 76 while Junior Jeffrey Kang is tied for 72nd at 7-over 79.

USC tees off Saturday starting at 8 a.m.
