Junior Anthony Paolucci tied for first while freshman Rico Hoey and junior Eric Sugimoto joined him in the top 10 and were among five Trojans in the top 16 as No. 23 USC finished a 36-hole first-day in first at the Jones Invitational at the Saticoy C.C. in Somis, Calif., on Monday (Feb. 24).
The Trojans, gunning for their first win of the season, combined for a 9-over 585 (292-293), four better than second-place San Diego State and seven better than third place San Diego.
Paolucci (70-73), after his first collegiate win and fourth top 10 finish this season, is tied with San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini at 1-under 143. His 2-under first round featured three birdies against a bogey and he mixed four birdies against five bogeys in the second round to pace the Trojans.
Hoey is tied for sixth at 3-over 147 (74-73). The freshman with three top 7 finishes already this year, including a win, had two birdies during his 2-over first round and three during the second. He was 1-under after a birdie on 14 in the second round before his lone double bogey of the day on 15.
Sugimoto, who led USC in its previous event at the Prestige at PGA West, is tied for eighth at 4-over 148 (74-74). He had three birdies and five bogeys in both rounds.
Senior Jeffrey Kang is tied for 11th at 5-over 149 (76-73). Kang, looking for his third top 10 finish and fifth in the top 12 this season, was 1-over through 16 in the first round before finishing with a bogey and a double bogey. He rebounded with a solid second round, including birdies on 16 and 18 to get to 1-over over his second trip around the course.
Junior Paul Smith is tied for 16th at 6-over 150 (74-76). He had a combined eight birdies during a rollercoaster two rounds.
Senior Ramsey Sahyoun, playing individually, is tied for 35th at 10-over 154 (81-73). He collected an eagle on the par 5 6th hole during his 1-over second round.
Final round action begins Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.
