Sophomore Matt Giles is tied for ninth through 36 holes as he led the top-ranked Trojans on the first day of the 2009 USC Collegiate at the North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, Calif., on Monday (Feb. 23).

Stanford finished a long first day - played in generally fine conditions -- in first at 8-under 560 (284-276) and was followed by round-one leader BYU at 6-under 562 (275-287). Cal was third at 3-over 571 (285-286). USC, the defending team champions, is in eighth at 16-over 584 (292-292). The Trojans are playing without two-time All-American junior Jamie Lovemark, who is out approximately a month while recovering from a broken finger.

Giles led the Trojans' efforts at 1-under 141 (72-69). His first round featured four birdies, including one on 18 to get him to within one shot of par. He got hotter in the second round, which included two birdies and an eagle on 12. Giles, who is seeking to finish in the top 10 for the fifth time in as many outings this season, is three shots back of individual leader Gregor Main (138) of UCLA. USC has won the individual title the past two seasons.

USC freshman Steve Lim, playing as an individual, posted Troy's second-best day (though it doesn't count toward USC's totals). He finished tied for 15th at par 142 (71-71) and had seven birdies on the day.

Sophomore Tim Sluiter tied for 31st at 4-over 146 (71-75). The event's defending individual champion had five birdies on the day.

Senior Tom Glissmeyer tied for 39th at 6-over 148 (75-73). He had two birdies in each round as well as an eagle on 15 in the second round. Senior Ryan Linton finished tied for 44th at 7-over 149 (74-75). He had three birdies in each round. Rounding out USC's team-scoring efforts was sophomore Bo DeHuff, who tied for 63rd at 11-over 153 (78-75).

Trojan sophomore Daniel Park and senior Gavin Reid also played individually for the Trojans. Park tied for 34th with a solid two-round effort of 5-over 147 (75-72) while Reid tied for 61st at 10-over 152 (78-74).

Play concludes Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. with tee times off the 1st and 10th tees.
