No. 8 USC Men's Golf Shares Title At The Prestige At PGA West
Feb. 20, 2013
Junior Ramsey Sahyoun fired a 3-under 68 to lead four Trojans under par as the No. 8 USC men's golf team erased an eight-stroke deficit heading into the final round and tied for first at The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., on Wednesday (Feb. 20).
The Trojans combined for a 54-hole 1-under 851 (279-294-278), using a 6-under third round to catch second-round co-leader Washington. UCLA was tied with the Huskies entering the final 18 holes, but finished tied for third with Texas Tech at 4-over.
Sophomore Anthony Paolucci was one of three Trojans who carded 1-under 70s today and he finished in a three-way tie for 2nd at 3-under 210 (70-70-70). USC's top finisher for the third event in a row (finishing under par in all three), Paolucci put together a six-birdie final round and only a patch of late bogeys prevented a run at first place.
Junior Jeffrey Kang (67-76-70) and freshman Yi Keun Chang (69-74-70) tied for seventh at even 213. Kang had four birdies during his final round, a nice rebound from his 5-over Tuesday, while Chang had two birdies against one bogey during a strong and steady afternoon.
Chang's tie for seventh was his third top 10 of the season and he has yet to finish outside the top 26 in five outings. For Kang, it was his third top 12 of the season.
Sahyoun tied for 58th at 12-over 225 (83-74-68), steadying his play after a tough first round. His final round Wednesday featured five birdies, including a stretch of four in six holes between 11 and 16. His 68 was his third this season.
Senior Sam Smith tied for 61st at 14-over 227 (73-81-73). He rallied after a disappointing second round and closed with a 1-under back 9.
USC's tie for first is its highest finish this season and its best since winning the 2012 NCAA Ann Arbor Regional last year. The Trojans have yet to finish outside the top 4 in any event this season.
The Trojans return to action Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 25-26) when they play in the North Ranch Intercollegiate at the North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village. USC has traditionally hosted the event but is co-hosting with Pepperdine this year.
