Feb. 6, 2015
Sophomore Rico Hoey fired his second consecutive 66 while junior Bobby Gojuangco followed his 69 with a 67 as the No. 15 USC men's golf team finished the second day of the Amer Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Beach (Hawaii) in second place on Friday (Feb. 6).
USC, a top 2 finisher in four of its five fall events, stands at 27-under 549 (276-273), dropping to three back of first-place Washington's 30-under 546 (277-269). Auburn is third at -22 with Arizona State fourth at -21.
Hoey's 66 gives him four straight rounds in the 60s dating back to the fall and six in his last eight rounds. It was his fifth round of 66 or better this year and his eighth in the 60s overall. He is alone in second, two back of Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan, who has been one better than Hoey both days. Hoey had eight birdies on the day, including five in a row between 12 and 16.
Gojuangco moved into a tie for seventh at 8-under 136 (69-67). He had five birdies Friday as well as an eagle on the par 5 18th hole.
Freshman Sean Crocker (70-71) and senior Paul Smith (72-69) are tied for 24th at 3-under 141. Crocker had six birdies, including four straight between 14 and 17. Smith had five birdies as he posted his fifth round in the 60s this season and third in the past five rounds.
Action concludes Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. (HT) with a shotgun start.
