Junior Anthony Paolucci fired a USC career-best 65 en route to a 36-hole, 7-under 135 to lead the No. 22 Trojan men's golf team to first place during the first day of the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Sewallo G.C. in Tucson, Ariz., on Monday (Jan. 27).
The Trojans, who took second in final fall event, combined for a two-round 4-under 563 (281-283) and have a two-shot lead over No. 4 California. New Mexico is third at 12-over 580.
Paolucci, still gunning for his first collegiate win, put himself in position to end the drought with his fine day-one performance while Cal's Brandon Hagy is close behind at 5-under.
Paolucci had previous carded three 66s in his career as a Trojan, including in the final fall event of the 2013 schedule, but outdid himself in a sizzling first round. His front 9 included four birdies and an eagle on the 593-yard par 5 8th hole and he finished the back 9 at par. In a less eventful second round, he birdied 8 and bogeyed 9 before closing with a birdie on 17 for his two-round 7-under.
Hoey got off to somewhat of a slow start in the first round and was 4-over through 15 before birdying 16 and 18. He was 2-under through 12 in the second round, bogeyed three straight between 13 and 15 but rebounded with birdies on 16 and 17 for a 1-under second round.
Kang notched only his second 70 of the season in the first round, which included four consecutive birdies on the back 9, part of a stretch of five birdies over six holes to help make up for a triple and double bogeys earlier in the round. He had three birdies during his 1-over second round.
Eric Sugimoto, a junior transfer from Pacific, made his Trojan debut today and shook off a slow start with a strong finish and is tied for 41st at 9-over 151 (81-70). His second round got off to a shaky start as well at 3-over through 10 holes, but he finished the final eight holes at 4-under thanks to five birdies.
Sophomore Bobby Gojuangco is tied with Sugimoto for 41st at 9-over 151 (73-78). He had three birdies in each round.
Final-round play begins Tuesday (Jan. 28) at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
