THIS SEASON: Paul Smith, a 2015 senior, looks to build on his USC debut as a junior last year when he was a regular starter and a reliable contributor for the Trojans.
2014: Smith, the younger brother of former Trojan All-American Sam Smith, had five top 20 finishes as a 2014 junior and finished fifth on the team in stroke average (73.44) to go with three rounds in the 60s (all final rounds) ... He had a pair of top 10 finishes, including a tie for seventh at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational at 2-under 214 (72-73-69) and a tie for ninth at the Pac-12 Championships at 4-over 292 (71-71-72-78). Smith was in contention for the conference title until late in the final round. Other top finishes included a tie for 16th at The Goodwin at even 210 (71-73-66) and a tie for 18th at the Gifford Collegiate at 3-over 213 (75-70-68). He also tied for 19th at the Jones Invitational at 10-over 226 (74-76-76) ... Smith enjoyed success in the 2014 summer, tying for sixth at the Southwestern Amateur by shooting a career low competitive score of 64. He was the third seed in the California State Amateur and advanced to the semifinals and he also competed in the 2014 U.S. Amateur.
CAL STATE STANISLAUS: As a 2014 sophomore at Cal State Stanislaus, Smith was tabbed a member of the Division II Ping All-American team as an honorable mention pick and also earned GCAA Division II PING All-Region honors ... He finished the season with a 73.5 stroke average (including eight rounds in the 60s) and had seven top 10 finishes with three in the top 5 ... Smith earned 2012 CCAA Freshman of the Year honors thanks to five top 20 finishes, including two in the top 10. Smith, who had five rounds in the 60s, helped Stanislaus reach the NCAA Division II match play semifinals.
HIGH SCHOOL: Smith prepped at Turlock (Calif.) High where he won back-to-back Sac-Joaquin Section Masters events as a junior and a senior. He fired 69s in both wins ... He helped lead the Bulldogs to four straight Central California Conference titles and was named the Modesto Bee's Stanislaus District Golfer of the Year in 2010 and 2011.
