Dec. 9, 2003
Junior defensive end Kenechi Udeze has been named to the 2003 The Sporting News All-American first team, while safety Darnell Bing made the publication's Freshman All-American first team.
Senior offensive tackle Jacob Rogers and sophomore wide receiver Mike Williams made the TSN All-American second team.
It's the second All-American first team honor for Udeze in 2003, as he previously made the Football Writers squad. He is the first All-American first team Trojan defensive lineman since Tim Ryan in 1989. The three-year starter also is one of six finalists for the Hendricks Award.
He had 51 tackles this season, including 22 for loss with 13.5 sacks (both team bests). He also had 4 forced fumble, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, 3 deflections and a blocked field goal. He currently is fourth nationally in sacks (1.1, second in Pac-10), fifth in tackles for a loss (1.8, first in Pac-10) and tied for 10th in forced fumbles (0.4, third in Pac-10)...1 of only 2 players ranked in the Top 10 in all 3 categories. His 22 tackles for a loss and 13.5 sacks in 2003 are the most by a Trojan defensive lineman since Tim Ryan's 28 and 20, respectively, in 1989. He is the first Trojan with double digits in sacks since Willie McGinest in 1992 (16).
Bing he had 60 tackles (fourth on USC), including 2 for losses, plus a fumble recovery, 2 interceptions and 5 deflections while starting at strong safety in 2003. He was named to the All-Pac-10 honorable mention squad.
