USC Football Hosts Arizona State To Conclude 3-Game Homestand
Oct. 31, 2010
As November arrives, USC concludes a 3-game homestand by hosting Arizona State. Troy has captured the last 10 meetings in its young series with ASU (the Trojans have played the Sun Devils less than any other league foe). The Trojans are looking to bounce back from a 3-touchdown home loss to top-ranked Oregon, while ASU is coming off a huge home shutout victory over Washington State.
Head coach Lane Kiffin's 2010 offense, which is cranking out some impressive figures, continues to be ranked in the national Top 25 in every statistical category. QB Matt Barkley already is in the USC career passing and total offense Top 10 charts. His top aerial targets are multi-threat WRs Ronald Johnson, who is among USC's career Top 15 receivers and as the nation's No. 3 punt returner is on pace to set the school career and season punt return average records, and Freshman All-American candidate Robert Woods, the nation's No. 7 all-purpose runner who already has established USC season kickoff return marks in 2010. The Trojan ground attack is led by physical TBs Marc Tyler and Allen Bradford, plus versatile FB Stanley Havili.
The USC defense, though stung like everybody else by Oregon last week, has shown signs of improvement in recent games. Troy's defensive leaders include CB Shareece Wright, DT Jurrell Casey, S T.J. McDonald and LB Devon Kennard. The Trojans are ineligible for post-season play due to NCAA penalty.
Arizona State head coach Dennis Erickson has guided 3 different Pac-10 schools against USC, but he is just 1-7 against the Trojans. The young Sun Devils (just 13 seniors) have won 2 of their past 3 games after a 3-game slide. ASU is 16th nationally in passing offense, thanks to the arm of QB Steven Threet, who is 23rd in the nation in total offense. True freshman TB Deantre Lewis, who has 3 100-yard outings this season, and sophomore TB Cameron Marshall are the top ground gainers, while key pass catchers are WRs Kerry Taylor, Mike Willie and Aaron Pflugrad. LB Vontaze Burfict is ASU's top tackler on a defense that is 15th nationally against the run and tops in the Pac-10 in tackles for loss. The Sun Devils have blocked 3 punts and an extra point kick in 2010. P Trevor Hawkins is the Pac-10's leading punter (third in the nation).
The game will be shown live nationally on FSN cable. Other USC sports in action on campus earlier on Saturday are men's water polo, basketball and volleyball and men's and women's diving.
