    Su'a Cravens

    Sept. 29, 2014

LOS ANGELES - USC safety Su'a Cravens and women's soccer midfielder Sydney Sladek were each named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 22-28, on Monday, Sept. 29.

Su'a Cravens led the Trojans' stalwart defense with six tackles against Oregon State on Saturday. The sophomore safety was zoned in all game, coming in from the secondary to drop the Beavers for a loss on two occasions, including a sack that would halt a Beaver drive late in the second quarter.

Cravens' biggest contribution came early when he returned an interception for a touchdown to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead. With Oregon State looking to march down the field, the Beaver quarterback threw to his left looking to hit his receiver on a shallow out route. Cravens, initially playing towards the middle of the field, pursued the pass and jumped the route to pick off the ball and return it 31 yards for a touchdown. USC would go on to win 35-10 in dominating fashion. The Trojans next game will be home against Arizona State on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 4:30 p.m. PT.

The other USC men's student-athlete of the week nominees were Bryce Hoerman (water polo) and Javorius Allen (football).

Sydney Sladek led the Women of Troy to defeat Arizona, 3-0, on Friday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, the freshman midfielder electrified the offense by assisting Katie Johnson on a goal and scoring a goal of her own, marking her first as a Trojan.

With the Trojans leading 2-0 in the 83rd minute, Sladek received the ball in the Arizona zone, eluded defenders and ultimately rifled in a shot past the Wildcat goalkeeper to seal the win. Sladek and the Trojans return home on Friday, Oct. 3, to face Colorado at 3 p.m. PT.

The other USC women's student-athlete of the week nominee was Katerina Berdousi (soccer).

The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel. Student assistant voters include Charlotte Adlam, Taiu Kunimoto, Nikki Borchard, Andrew McKagan, Eike Daube, Tera Novy, Carlene Jones, Max Schwartz, Gaby Smotrys, Aubrey Kragen, and intern Katie Ryan.
