Sept. 16, 2013
LOS ANGELES - Women's soccer forward Katie Johnson and women's volleyball outside hitter Elise Ruddins shared USC Women's Student-Athlete of the Week honors, while Cody Kessler of football was named Men's Student-Athlete of the Week.
USC Women's Student-Athletes of the Week: Sophomore Katie Johnson became the first Trojan since 2010 to tally a hat trick with her three goals in the first 19 minutes of play vs. LMU. That outing matched her entire scoring total from her freshman season, as she now holds four total goals now seven games into her sophomore season. Johnson's three goals vs. LMU helped USC match its highest game scoring total since 2010, when the Trojans last scored five in a game. The win snapped a two-game skid by USC, which is now 4-2-1 overall this season.
USC Women's Student-Athletes of the Week: USC freshman outside hitter Elise Ruddins earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors after posting a strong weekend for the Women of Troy at the USD Tournament, where she earned a spot on the all-tournament team. In a four-set win over UC Santa Barbara, Ruddins carried the load for USC as she posted 24 kills (6e, 43att) and hit an impressive .419. She averaged six kills per set and had nine in the first set alone. Later the same day, Ruddins logged 14 kills (53, 27att) and hit .333 to help the Trojans sweep Eastern Washington in three sets. In her two matches, she had 38 kills (5.43 kps) and scored 39.0 points (5.57 pps).
USC Men's Student-Athlete of the Week: Redshirt sophomore quarterback Cody Kessler led the Trojans to a 35-7 victory over visiting Boston College on Saturday. In his first game after being named the season starter, Kessler was near perfect in his passing accuracy, at one point completing 14 consecutive passes, including a touchdown bomb to wide receiver Marqise Lee. He finished the game 15-of-17 (88.2%) for 237 yards and two touchdowns through three-plus quarters, before being relieved by backup Max Wittek after the first offensive series of the fourth quarter.
