    Kessler and Stanley Named USC Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week

    LOS ANGELES - USC football quarterback Cody Kessler and women's soccer goalie Caroline Stanley were named USC's Student-Athlete's of the Week for the week of Aug. 25-31, on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

    USC CREDIT UNION MEN'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

    Kessler led the Trojan offense in a dominating win over Fresno State, 52-13. On Saturday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Kessler threw the ball for 394 yards and four touchdowns. Kessler also ran the ball in for a touchdown as the high-powered Trojan offense accomplished a Pac-12 record of 105 plays ran. The junior quarterback connected with wide receiver Nelson Agholor on two touchdowns. Kessler also facilitated the breakout performance of freshman wide receiver JuJu Smith, who totaled 123 receiving yards in his Trojan debut.

    Kessler succeeded personal milestones on Saturday as his 394 passing yards was a single-game career best and he tied a career high for touchdown passes (4) and completions (25). Kessler has now thrown at least one touchdown pass in eight straight games and has thrown at least two touchdown passes seven times. Kessler and the Trojans travel to Palo Alto, Calif. , Sept. 6, to face No. 13-ranked Stanford.

    Other USC men's student-athlete of the week nominees were JuJu Smith (football) Leonard Williams (football).

    USC CREDIT UNION WOMEN'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

    Stanley had an extraordinary outing at the Notre Dame Invitational, which led to a statement victory over ninth-ranked Notre Dame. The Women of Troy began the weekend with a win over Iowa State where Stanley made two key saves in the second half to preserve the Trojan lead in a come-from-behind 3-1 victory.

     

     

    Her steadfast goalkeeping continued in the match against the perennial powerhouse Fighting Irish. In the 74th minute, with the Trojans up, 2-1, the Women of Troy were whistled for a hand ball in the box. Stanley delivered in the clutch with a huge save on an Irish penalty kick that eventually led to the statement win over the Irish. Stanley totaled seven saves over the weekend, and proved to be a powerful force in the net.

    Other USC women's student-athlete of the week nominees were Reilly Parker (soccer) and Samantha Bricio (volleyball).

    The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel. Student assistant voters include Charlotte Adlam, Taiu Kunimoto, Nikki Borchard, Andrew McKagan, Eike Daube, Tera Novy, Carlene Jones, Max Schwartz, Gaby Smotrys, Aubrey Kragen, and intern Katie Ryan.
